The teen years can be difficult and overwhelming at times. Bullying, anxiety and even suicide are all too common and very real problems faced by teens today. In an effort to combat these increasingly complex issues, the Kent State Performing Arts Center will hold a free Adolescent Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Night on Feb. 26.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with informational booths from local mental health agencies and counseling centers providing relevant material and answering any questions.

The program portion of the event will begin at 7 p.m., featuring Dr. Margaret D. Storey, the lead mental health counselor at Perry Local Schools in Canton. She will share first-hand knowledge of her experiences at the school this year.

Following her presentation will be detective Adam Fisher from the Sheriff’s Department, who will speak on risky behaviors involving teen social media.

The third and final speaker will be a representative from the Tuscarawas County Board of Alcohol Drug Addiction, and the representative will share information about services available to teens in the area. Following the program there will be a panel discussion and time for a Q-and-A session.

The entire community is invited. The event is sponsored by the Tuscarawas Area Counseling Association in partnership with Tuscarawas County School Districts, Buckeye Career Center and the East Central Ohio Educational Service Center.

The Kent State Performing Arts Center is located at 330 University Drive NE in New Philadelphia.
