Late Saturday, May 2, the New Philadelphia City health commissioner, Vickie Ionno was notified of the death of a New Philadelphia resident. The 43-year-old male was tested at the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital for COVID-19 and was found positive.

This makes the first death of a resident who tested positive in New Philadelphia and the first in Tuscarawas County. This resident had other underlying health conditions so the Tuscarawas County coroner is investigation this death and will make the final ruling.

Out of respect for the family of the resident and protected health information, no additional information regarding this death will be released. “As everyone is aware the infection from coronavirus can present differently in people," Ionno said. "Some people have mild to moderate symptoms, but can become severe in others and can result in death.”

The Ohio Department of Health makes the following recommendations to protect yourself and others from illness:

Practice Social Distancing of at least 6 feet from others.

Use of a facial covering over your nose and mouth to block respiratory droplets when in public.

Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air-dry hands.

Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.

Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Stay home when you are sick.

Avoid contact with people who are sick.
