Pomerene celebrates National Nurses Week with fun walk and 5K
Every year during National Nurses Week, the nurses at Joel Pomerene Hospital look for ways to show appreciation to each other for the work they do year round.
This year, Beth Amicones unit is planning the activities, and they have made sure the nurses feel taken care of. Starting May 6, the nurses will enjoy a homemade breakfast with a Blessing of Hands, followed by a speaker who will talk about the important balance between work and health on Wednesday, unlimited access to an ice cream machine Thursday, a chips and salsa day Friday and homemade cookies, tea and coffee Saturday.
As a bonus on top of the planned events, the nurses have a chance to win Cleveland Indians tickets, a grill and a gift basket through a raffle.
Its a competition between nursing units to collect items for the Humane Society, Amicone said. Theres big stuff and little stuff (on the list). She said the list of supplies needed can be found on the societys website.
Not only are the nurses donating items to the society, they have planned a 5K race and 1-mile fun walk to benefit the Humane Society. We always have a fall trail run, public relations and marketing coordinator Becky Ragon said. But this is our first year for a 5K. All the nurses were involved (in the planning).
Amicone said participants were welcome to bring dogs with them on the race route, which begins and ends at the Railroad Depot on the Holmes County Trail. The running path is paved and will have plenty of markers. No ones gotten lost yet, she joked.
Since the nurses are already providing much-needed supplies to the society, the money raised from this race will be donated to its larger projects. Amicone said the society is currently working on a gravel and cement project outside the kennel. We would love to give them money for that, she said. They do the best with what they have.
Volunteers from the Humane Society will have dogs available for adoption at the starting line of the race. They are always looking for foster families and people to adopt, said Amicone. Anyone is welcome to come down and see them or walk.
The Humane is funded 100 percent by donations. Theya re looking for good home for the dogs so they can be provided for.
The 5K race and fun walk exemplify National Nurses Weeks themeNurses Leading the Wayto a T. Joel Pomerenes nurses are leading the way to a healthier life and better conditions for the Humane Society animals.
Each person who registers for the event will pay an entry fee. Participants in the 5K will pay $25 and those in the walk will pay $10. Registration for both races is still open and T-shirts will be available while supplies last. Both the 5K and the walk are Saturday, May 10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. with registration from 8-8:45 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m.
