Safe Kids/Healthy Kids Day returns to Kent State University at Tuscarawas once again for its 17th year. The free event is open to everyone in the community and offers a unique opportunity to kids and those who care for them.
Safe Kids/Healthy Kids will take place Sunday, May 23, from 1-4 p.m., and will be filled with fun and informative activities, including the favorite bicycle rodeo, and demonstrations from local rescue personnel along with LifeFlight. Throughout the day there will be programs to educate kids and caregivers alike, including programs promoting child safety in the kitchen, on hiking trails and fire survival, among many others. Kids who participate in at least four programs will receive a free T-shirt and are eligible to win a bike during the 4 p.m. prize drawing.
Photo identification and fingerprinting will be provided by the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club and the Tuscarawas County Sheriffs Department for the first 200 kids. Healthy snacks, provided by New Dawn Child Care Center, will be on sale in the Student Union where 17 exhibits will be set up and prizes will be given away. Safety-related prizes donated by the New Philadelphia Kiwanis include smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, child car seats, booster seats and first-aid kits.
The Bicycle Rodeo returns this year and is sponsored by Safe Kids and the Brandywine 4-H volunteers. Bicycles and safety equipment will be provided for the participants, who must be at least six years old. The first 100 participants will receive a bike helmet donated also by the New Philadelphia Kiwanis.
