The struggle to lose weight and keep the pounds off is a common experience. You desperately want to lower your blood pressure and cholesterol to be healthier, but find it’s easier said than done. Union Hospital at Dover is teaming with Aultman Hospital in Canton to bring the popular weight management program to UH facilities at the Oxford Medical Building, 340 Oxford St., in Dover. Carey Gardner, director of development and community relations for Union Hospital, said the program offers a safe and effective way to lose weight with the convenience of a Dover location. “The Aultman Weight Management program has more than 20 years of experience using a team of physicians, registered nurses and licensed dietitians to help program participants embrace a healthy lifestyle,” Gardner said. Many area residents have traveled to Canton over the years to take part in the weight management program. Gardner said teaming with Aultman Hospital to offer the program in Dover will make the program accessible to more local people. Free information sessions are held regularly to help introduce the weight management program to the area. Reservations are required. Call 330-491-1670 or go to http://www.aultman.org/weight. For a limited time only, Tuscarawas County residents will save $75 off the initial screening. Since 1989, the Aultman Weight Management programs have helped participants lose thousands of pounds a year – more than 17,000 pounds in 2010 alone – while reducing blood pressure and cholesterol, according to Susan Gilbert, program director. “We pride ourselves on our ability to not only help you lose weight, but keep it off for a lifetime,” Gilbert said. Depending on an individual’s weight-loss needs, the program’s health care professionals will determine which program is right for them: New Direction, New Outlook or New Choices. Each program combines the key components of weight-loss success: nutrition, behavior modification, physical activity and emotional support. Dietitians teach weekly clinics on nutrition guidelines and healthy eating, while motivating clients to be successful and stick to their customized plan. “You will also find that our meal replacement options are affordable – comparable to cooking at home,” said dietitian Tiffany Evans, RD, LD. “The options meet all of your nutritional needs and help your body burn fat as a fuel source.” The average weight-loss rate is three to five pounds per week for New Direction and two to three pounds per week with New Outlook. Exercise is very important, so all programs include a discounted membership to the Union Hospital Healthplex. Gilbert said no contract is necessary like many other weight-loss programs. Physical and emotional benefits of weight loss - Reduced risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and certain cancers. - Increased confidence: socialize without feeling self-conscious, and fit into the clothes you actually like to wear. - Enhanced quality of life: more energy to play with your children/grandchildren, live a more active life and have fewer aches and pains. - Improved breathing and ability to sleep. An estimated 18 million Americans have sleep apnea, which is often associated with people who are overweight. Not only does obesity contribute to sleep problems such as sleep apnea, but sleep problems can also contribute to obesity.
