Thunder Over Holmes County will include an all-new event when Chalk the Lot debuts in the Commercial and Savings Bank parking lot on June 30.

Participants are encouraged to find their inner artist and participate in the first-time event in downtown Millersburg that benefits the Friends & Neighbors of OneEighty.

“Ruth Waltman has been heading up the event,” said Kim Mullet, a OneEighty board member on the Chalk the Lot committee. “She has seen events like this when she vacationed in Florida and thought it would be something new and fun to bring to Millersburg.”

The contest is free and open to teams made up of businesses, local artists or families who want to use art to support Friends & Neighbors of OneEighty. Drawings must be a 4-foot-by-4-foot square. Chalk will be provided. Participants must be age 12 or older, and all participants under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

“In order to keep it free for participants, we are asking local businesses and organizations to sponsor each square,” Mullet said. “On the day of the event, we will have 2-foot-by-2-foot squares available for a donation for children under 12 to decorate.”

A first prize of $100, second prize of $75 and third prize of $50 will be awarded.

Check-in is at 7:30 a.m., and artists may begin their chalk drawings at 8 a.m. They will have four hours in which to complete their work. Judging will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Artists must bring their own blankets, cardboard, knee pads and such and are responsible for the security of their belongings. The committee and event organizers can accept no responsibility for stolen or damaged goods or accidents or injury during the event.

One box of chalk will be provided. Artists must remain within the lines of their assigned space.

The committee reserves the right to prohibit art that expresses religious, moral, political or controversial opinions or subjects. Commercial advertising messages, business logos and alcohol/tobacco themes as well as nudity, vulgarity or explicit language expression will not be allowed.

To register, pick up a form at Commercial and Savings Bank at 91 N. Clay St. in Millersburg or call Ashley at 724-699-8685 or Kim at 330-204-0876.

Mail completed registrations to P.O. Box 189, Millersburg, OH 44654.

Registrations must be received by June 15. The Chalk the Lot committee considers a completed registration form to be a commitment that the artists, business teams and families will participate.

In the event of inclement weather, a July 7 rain date has been scheduled.
