Hawks capture Black Bear Invite, Knights keep on rolling

West Holmes’ Maverick Rickley follows his shot. The Knights have played well all year and added a strong finish at the Black Bear Invitational and a win over Lexington this past week.

                        

Hiland turned in another spectacular performance in collecting a title at the River View Black Bear Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Hilltop Golf Course. The Hawks fired a 294, easily moving past runner-up New Philadelphia’s 314. Marietta was third in the field of 18 teams at 319 while Garaway placed fourth at 319, losing on a tiebreaker. West Holmes fired a 322 for fifth, defeating John Glenn on a tiebreaker.

Carter Mishler of Hiland won medalist honors with a three-under-par 69 while teammate Brookston Hummel was runner-up at 72. Rounding out Hiland’s effort was Kenny Weaver at 76, Garret Shoup with a 77 and Nathan Kline with an 81.

Garaway’s Trace Gibson was honored as the low number-one man with a one-over-par 73 while his teammates Carter Miller (79), Emmet Royer (81), Nick Maust (86) and Caleb Meek (92) rounded out Garaway’s day.

West Holmes got a fantastic round from Hunter Ellis, who fired a 74, while his teammates Trye Baker (81), Brody Allen (83), Grady Toye (84) and Brice Hunter (87) put forth a consistent day for the Knights. Hunter’s score of 87 gave the Knights sole possession of fifth.

The Knights placed 12th at the Lexington Invitational, posting a team score of 344. Allen led the Knights with an 82, Ellis chipped in with an 83, Baker carded an 88 and Toye added a 91 to round out the scoring.

The Knights also tied Lexington 173-173 but picked up a victory on the tiebreaker, thanks to Kenzie Woods’ 88. Leading WHHS was Ellis, who fired a 35, while Toye added a 44, Baker carded a 46 and Allen added a 48.

In match play Hiland easily downed East Canton 144-232. Hummel led all scorers with a 33, Mishler carded a 36, Weaver shot a 37, Shoup added a 38 and Kline came in at 40.
