Holmes Disc Golf Club has exciting plans for 2024
With 2023 in the books, it was another great year for disc golf in Holmes County. The Deer Run Disc Golf course continues to be a favorite among Ohio disc golfers, ranking 19th out of 388 courses in Ohio, according to the scoring app at www.udisc.com. A total of 3,148 rounds were scored on udisc by 419 distinct players, and as many local players don’t use the scoring app, those numbers are probably higher. With all the interest in disc golf, the HCDGC looks forward to 2024.
Winter putting league
The winter putting league is already in full swing. The group meets every Thursday through the end of February. All players are welcome. Players practice putting from different stations and then score their throws, with a competitive group and a casual group. The competitive group will play $5 to play, with $4 going to payouts, while the casual group is $1 with a chance to win a disc. Locations and times may vary, so check the club’s Facebook page for details at www.facebook.com/holmesdiscgolf/.
Tournaments
The tournament season gets kicked off this year with the third annual Lost Course Tournament on Feb. 17 at noon at Deer Run Park. The Lost Course is a tournament where the club sets up the course to be played backward. This is a treat for area regulars who can sometimes get bored with the current layout.
The spring singles tournament will be May 11 starting at 9 a.m.
The summer tournament will be July 27 starting at 9 a.m. Like last year, it will be a doubles best throw tournament where teams compete against each other.
The final tournament of the season will be a new feature for the club: The Trilogy Challenge. It will be Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. Unlike other tournaments where players bring their own discs, each player will receive an identical package of three discs. This helps level the playing field as all the players have the same discs and have to get used to the discs as they play. Players then keep the discs after the tournament.
Thursday competition nights
Competition nights will be back again this year, meeting on Thursdays starting April 11 and running through October. The type of play varies, from individual to pairs. Two divisions will be available. The competitive group will pay $5, with $4 toward payouts. The casual division will be much more low key, with participants paying only $1 and having the chance of win a disc.
The HCDGC thanks the Village of Millersburg and all the local volunteers who continue to invest time and resources to keep the Deer Run course in top shape, as well as Hershberger Lawn Structures for its support of the club and local course. This year the company has purchased nine new baskets for the course so players can play either the A or B locations any time. The baskets should arrive in time for the spring tournament. Anyone interested in buying anything disc golf related is encouraged to stop by the store at 8990 state Route 39 in Millersburg, where there is a large supply of discs, bags and baskets. For those wishing to try disc golf, discs can be borrowed from the Holmes County Library.
