Secrest Arboretum is now accepting applications for the 2020 Master Gardener volunteer training program. Master Gardener trainees receive university-level training in horticulture from Ohio State University Extension in the areas of botany, soils, trees, flowers, lawns, fruits and vegetables, entomology, pest management, and diagnostic skills.

After training, new volunteers work with current Master Gardeners in various activities in and around Wayne County to meet 50 hours of service their first year. Opportunities include answering questions on the horticulture research line, educating local gardeners on plant selection or issues, helping kids maintain a community garden and more.

Master Gardeners receive the social aspect of learning together, volunteering together and helping others in the county. Volunteers are not required to have gardening skills or knowledge, but a passion for learning about gardening and sharing this knowledge with others is a must.

The training program will start in March. To apply, visit u.osu.edu/secrestmg, email program coordinator Paul Snyder at Snyder.1062@osu.edu or call 330-263-3968. The deadline to apply is Dec. 31.
