West Holmes boys, girls bowling teams fall to Wooster
West Holmes’ Zaylie Shultz rolled a 267 series against Wooster on Dec. 20 at Spare Time Lanes.
West Holmes’ boys and girls bowling teams faced off with Ohio Cardinal Conference rival Wooster on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Spare Time Lanes.
The visiting Generals won both matches, with the boys prevailing 2,226-1,787 and the girls winning 1,780-1,604.
On the boys side, Wooster’s Dawson Gaynor rolled games of 193 and 225 for a 418 series to lead all bowlers. He was backed by Gavin Ennis (399 series) and Isaac Ebie (392).
The Generals also excelled in Baker games, rolling a 210 and 155. West Holmes finished its Baker games with totals of 153 and 127.
Jesse Hickman twirled games of 209 and 141 for a 350 series to lead the Knights. Kayden Worley was right behind him with games of 165 and 174 for a 339 series. Adam Mast (140-159-299), Caden Medley (141-146-287) and Tristan Middaugh (104-128-232) also competed for WH.
“The boys did good at first and started struggling a little bit towards the middle,” West Holmes coach Chris Young said. “They got some things figured out toward the end and started getting their scores up.”
Young said he was hoping to see some higher scores from his bowlers but was happy with how they went out and competed.
“This is a first-year team, so we’re doing everything we can,” he said. “These kids are doing great. They’re all working together well. I haven’t had any issues (with them).”
On the girls side, Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker paced all bowlers with games of 181 and 227 for a 408 series. Linnea Savage added games of 213 and 153 for a 367 series while Emma Thompson (257) and Abby Coleman (233) also finished with a 200-plus series for the Lady Generals.
All five West Holmes bowlers turned in solid scores. Aubree Young (123-144) and Zaylie Shultz (134-133) both finished with a 267 series to pace the Lady Knights. Bella Gindlesberger (120-138-258), Chloe Miller (127-130-257) and Brynlee Reed (114-135-249) also competed for WH.
“The first game on the individuals was a little lower, but that happens,” coach Young said. “It goes from game to game. They’re all doing great for first-year bowlers. I’m extremely happy with them.”
The two teams split the Baker games. Wooster won the first one 146-114 and West Holmes the second 192-129.
“I think we played good (against Wooster),” Reed said. “We definitely competed with them. It was fun to see two teams in the OCC going against each other, but I think we did pretty good against them.”
Reed said facing a conference opponent isn’t any different from their nonleague matches.
“To me, it’s kind of all the same,” she said. “I always get nervous before I throw my first ball. Wooster is really loud (with cheering), though, so I think there’s a little extra nerves with Wooster.”
