While school may well be for kids from kindergarten through 12th grade, the West Holmes School District does not want area senior citizens to feel forgotten in their role in the school district.

The district will present its annual Senior Citizen Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the West Holmes High School Little Theater.

The event was designed a number of years ago as a way to connect the school district with senior citizens who are interested in what is taking place in the district and what the future might bring. Those in attendance are welcome to ask questions and voice concerns, and Dawn Martin, West Holmes food service director, said the event has been very educational and enjoyable over the years.

“This is something that Dixie Gray put in place when she was here as the food service director that she implemented for the older people in our community to share their voice about the school district,” Martin said. “It is important to stay in touch with them and make sure that their voice is heard because they continue to be a vital part of our school district.”

Martin said questions have ranged from tax levies and the buildings and trade program to free and reduced lunches and many more topics.

West Holmes Superintendent Bill Sterling, WHHS principal Aaron Kaufman, West Holmes School District curriculum director Brian Baughman and Martin will be on hand to answer questions and provide additional information throughout the Q-and-A period.

“We open it up for any and all discussion in hopes of staying on top of all of the issues that might affect our seniors,” Martin said. “It’s been a terrific outreach program that we are excited to offer every year.”

Doors for the event will open at 11 a.m. with the West Holmes Chamber Choir performing at 11:30 a.m. The open discussion will begin at noon with a beef and noodle meal following in the cafeteria. The event will include door prizes that were made by Tracy Chance’s industrial arts metal class.

The event also will be served by the class of intervention specialist Melissa Slauson’s Family and Consumer Science special needs students, who will help serve and clean up.

“The students make all the decorations and are in charge of a lot of what will take place with the meal,” Martin said.

Martin said anyone who would like to attend should call to make reservations, but they are not required. For questions or registration, call Martin at 330-674-3546.
