During the bustle of everyday life, one may not think about the American Red Cross . . . unless your CPR card is about to expire. However, there is a group of people focused on the Red Cross and its ability to help in times of need. These people are members of the American Red Cross. It consists of volunteers from Tuscarawas, Carroll and Harrison counties. They are ready to respond to situations whether large (tornado or winter storm) or small (a house fire). During these times, the volunteers supply food, clothing, shelter and other additional needs to those affected. The items supplied do not come from some vast government program, but through the donations of the citizens served by the chapter. However, the chapter needs help. Yes, it would be nice if everyone gave a lot of money to the chapter, but that is not all that is needed. People make the chapter work. The Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross has a goal of adding 30 team volunteers by the end of 2011. These volunteers work to be trained in the key response areas of the American Red Cross. As they become more adept at what they do, there is room to grow within the Red Cross for state and national opportunities. Anyone can volunteer – young or old, skilled or unskilled. It is a perfect opportunity to learn a new vocation, leadership skills or develop a new hobby. The following areas are needed right now: nurses, HAM radio operators, administrative assistants, licensed social workers or counselors, teachers, those with construction background, students (high school or college), computer-oriented people (technicians or operators), nutritionists, cooks, drivers (large and small vehicles) and administrators/managers. Remember, just because you don’t fit the list above doesn’t mean you can’t get involved.
