Claymont Foundation announces 2010 alumni award winners

                        
The Claymont Foundation will recognize their 2010 alumni award recipients on Saturday, May 8, at Claymont High School. The recipients are as follows: The 2010 Alumnus of the Year award is being presented to Lonnie Welch (C ’80), professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, and Molecular and Cellular Biology and director, Center for Scientific Computation and Immersive Technology at Ohio University. This award is granted to an individual who has demonstrated lifetime leadership and abilities in his or her chosen field. Welch received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 1985, his Master of Science in Computer Science in 1987 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1990, all from The Ohio State University. He was named the 1998 Outstanding Young Faculty Member of the College of Engineering and University of Texas at Arlington; 1998 Aegis Excellence Award winner by the United States Navy and in 2001 was named the Stuckey Professor at Ohio University and continues to hold that title. He previously served as assistant professor of Computer and Information Science, New Jersey Institute of Technology; summer faculty research scientist, United States Army; visiting research scholar, Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands; summer faculty research fellow, Naval Surface Warfare Center; research scientist, Naval Surface Warfare Center; associate professor, Computer Science and Engineering, University Texas at Arlington; team leader, AdCon-21 resource management system engineering team, U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center; professor, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Ohio University, Athens; director, Center for Scientific Computation and Immersive Technology, Ohio University; and consultant, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems; consultant, Ohio Supercomputer Center. He has numerous professional memberships and affiliations and has authored and co-authored more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed publications. Welch, his wife, Mary, along with their children Josh (20), Kristin (18), and Sarah (16) are also known as the Welch Family Bluegrass Gospel Group. The 2010 Alumnus Achievement Award winner is Sam Anton Terakedis (C ’70). This award is given to a person whose contributions have made an impact on society and the community. Terakedis is a self-taught, world-renowned award-winning bronze sculptor of North American wildlife. He is the owner of Moose Horn Gallery, Paradise Retreat, vice president and owner of Essence Tile, Inc. and owner and president of Sleepy Giant Artistry, Inc. His recognitions and awards include: 2008 Best in Show, 3-Dimensional, Calgary Stampede, Alberta, Canada; 2005 Best in Show and Collector’s Choice, Calgary Stampede; 2005 Best in Show, Nature Works Art Show, Tulsa, Okla.; 2004 Artist of the Year, presented by the National Wildlife Turkey Federation; 2004 first place award for Bronze Sculpture at the 30th annual Phippen Museum Art Show, Prescott, Ariz.; 2004 Artist’s Choice Award for 3-Dimensional, Calgary Stampede; 2003 Phippen Museum Award; 2003 Artist’s Choice Award for 3-Dimensional and 2001 Best New Artist, Calgary Stampede. Terakedis and his wife, Kathy, reside in Livingston, Mont. He has three children, Zach, Krista and Brianne and three stepchildren, Robert, Jeremy and Amanda. He is the son of Shirley Miller and the late Sam Terakedis. He is a member of Livingston Christian Center and the Livingston Chamber of Commerce. The 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award is Jackie Rae Davis Putnam (C ’76). The Distinguished Alumnus Award is given to a person who has dedicated his or her life or career to the service of humanity. Putnam has been employed by the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities as a preschool instructor for 29 years at Starlight School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree with dual certification in Elementary Education 1-8 and Special Education K-12. She received certification in MSPR/MH from Walsh College and Early Education of the Handicapped from Akron University. She is a member of the Grace United Methodist Church where she serves on the building and missions committee, is a member of the administrative board, is co-director of vacation Bible school, a Sunday school teacher and coordinates volunteers for Ohio’s Hunger Alliance for the summer feeding program. She received the 1993 Ruth Carlson Employee of the Year award from the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities. While travelling to Africa for a safari in 1999, she fell in love with Kenya and the Kenyans. She returned in 2007 for three weeks to do mission work with the orphans in the village of Mwimutani. She will be taking a missions trip to Egypt in the summer. She, her husband, David (Neil) Putnam, and their beloved dog, Whitney, reside in New Philadelphia. The 2010 Citizen of the Year award is being presented to Tom and Sue (Sandry) Huff (both U ’56). This award is given to a person who has been active in the community and in community education and awareness. Tom Huff is retired from AEP and Sue Huff retired after 30 years of teaching at Claymont. They have two children, Christopher (Carolyn) Huff and Barbara (Joe) Bollon and four grandchildren, Aleigh Bollon, Lauren (Derrick) Castello and Madeline and Samuel Huff. They are members of Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison and reside in Venice, Fla. Tom Huff is a member of the Moose and Elks clubs. He spent many years officiating football and basketball, receiving recognition from the East Central Ohio League. While at Uhrichsville High School, he enjoyed the camaraderie he shared with his teammates and was awarded 11 varsity sports letters. Sue Huff was a volunteer at the Twin City Hospital Coffee Bar. She is involved with the Venice Theatre; Our Mother’s House in Venice; a water aerobics instructor, librarian for the Summer Green Condo Association and a member of the board of directors for the Summer Green Condo Association. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Kent State University. In high school, she enjoyed being involved in extracurricular activities such as Sigma Tri and Future Teachers. She enjoyed the proms and school. She had a passion for learning and felt a strong loyalty and pride for Uhrichsville. The 2010 Teacher of the Year is Dianne Albaugh. The Teacher of the Year award is presented to a teacher based on quality of teaching, impact on students, committing to the educational process and pursuit of lifetime learning. Teachers nominated must have been at Claymont for at least five years and must be currently on the staff. Nominations for this award are made by their peers within the Claymont City School District. Albaugh is a business and technology teacher at Claymont High School and is a college tech prep instructor as well as an adjunct professor at Kent State University in the Computer Animation and Design Department (2005 to present), teaching online multimedia and game design. She received her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Ashland University in 1995 and her Bachelor of Science in Comprehensive Business Education from Kent State University in 1983. She is a 1979 graduate of Tuscarawas Central Catholic. Prior to teaching at Claymont, she was a business and journalism teacher at Tuscarawas Central Catholic. Albaugh assists with student development, design, and updating of websites for local community organizations, including the Twin City Chamber of Commerce, village of Dennison, Dennison Industrial Park, Uhrichsville Clay Museum and Dennison Railroad Festival. Her honors include the 2003 Twin City Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year award and 2001 Golden Apple Award. She is the Claymont City Schools webmaster, Cyber Club lead advisor, Senior Mentoring Project coordinator and internship mentor through the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) of Stark and Tuscarawas counties. She has a daughter, Alyssa, and a son, Anthony. The 2009-2010 teacher grant recipients and the 2010 scholarship award winners will also be recognized.
