The commissioners held a bid opening for the upcoming Berlin state Route 39 sanitary sewer extension that will take additional sewer and water east of Berlin.

The project will provide additional water and sewer capabilities beginning at the driveway at Encore Hotel and extending beyond Erb’s Stove Center to Little Cottage Company.

“We’ve been looking at this project for the past six or seven years,” commissioner Joe Miller said. “The church there is putting a huge addition on right now, and this is going to create jobs in Holmes County.”

Chris Young, Holmes County engineer, said the county currently has $630,000 of grant approval from Ohio Public Works Commission. He said this extension intercepts a pair of private treatment plants, one at Bethel Fellowship Church and one at Erb’s Stove Center. In addition, it will provide connection to the rest area located in front of the church, which is operated by Ohio Department of Transportation.

Shannon Baker of ODOT District 11 said there is ongoing discussion about hooking into both the water, which would be Berlin Water Company, and the sewer treatment project.

She said there is ongoing discussion from ODOT officials in updating the rest area facility.

“We received great bids from great contractors, and we appreciate it,” Young said. “It’s going to be a great project.”

The county received two bids, one from BK Layer LLC of Perrysville, Ohio in the amount of $719,639 and a second from Driven Excavating of Crestline, Ohio in the amount of $625,569.75.

The engineer’s office estimate was $700,000.

Young will now look over the bids and provide a recommendation for the commissioners at the next weekly meeting.
