The Fireside Readers Book Discussion Group at The University of Akron Wayne College is going strong as it begins its seventh year on Monday, August 1, in the Wayne College Community Room at 7 p.m. The group meets the first Monday of the month with the exception of Labor Day and will discuss “Unbroken: a World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” by Laura Hillenbrand at the first meeting. Participants may reserve book copies by contacting a local public library or by becoming a community member borrower at the Wayne College library. Maureen Lerch, library director at Wayne College, encourages new members to become a part of the readers group. “All a new member needs to do is show up,” Lerch said. “There are no dues or commitments; we just have great discussions about interesting books and enjoy the camaraderie of other book lovers. Plus, we always have snacks.” The Fireside Readers typically read memoirs, biographies or works of nonfiction and have chosen the following titles for fall: Monday, Sept. 12: (One week late due to Labor Day holiday) - “Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America,” by John Avlon Monday, Oct. 3: - “How Starbucks Saved my Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else,” by Michael Gates Gill Monday, Nov. 7: - “The Ghost Map: The Story of London’s Most Terrifying Epidemic--and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World,” by Steven Johnson Monday, Dec. 5: - “The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World,” by Jacqueline Novogratz If you would like more information about the discussion group or would like to be added to the email list, contact Lerch at 330-684-8951 or mlerch@uakron.edu.
