Healthy Tusc asks that you plant an Extra Row for the Hungry

The Healthy Tusc Taskforce is once again asking local gardeners to think ahead this year and Plant an Extra Row for the Hungry. In 2010, area food pantries accepted surplus produce that was grown and then donated to help community members in need. As part of its mission statement to provide better access to more nutritious foods, the Plant an Extra Row campaign is a logical project for Healthy Tusc. “The food pantries were pleasantly surprised at the fresh produce that was brought in by backyard gardeners,” stated Lynn Angelozzi, community garden subcommittee chairperson. “We want to build on last year’s successful program and have gained more community support for promoting the idea in 2011.” While supplies last, stop in at the following locations and pick up a Plant an Extra Row garden stake: Agland, Creekside Gardens (both Strasburg and New Towne Mall locations), Hillcrest Garden Center, Stutzman’s Lawn and Garden, Tractor Supply, Twin City Hospital front lobby, and the Union Hospital Gift Shoppe. The stake serves as a visual reminder and includes a list of all of the area food pantries that are willing to take the homegrown produce when harvested. The following food pantries are willing to receive the fresh produce when ready for harvest. Note day and time of each location: 1. Assembly of God, 742 Cookson Avenue SE, New Philadelphia (Monday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) 2. Greater Dover-New Phila Food Pantry, 420 West Third St., Dover (Monday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) 3. Friends of the Homeless, 211 East High Avenue, New Philadelphia (Monday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) 4.
