Historic Schoenbrunn Village opens for the season
Historic Schoenbrunn Village in New Philadelphia kicked off the summer season as it opened the village gates on June 2.The village, where Ohio's first settlement began, will be open throughout the summer, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m.
Schoenbrunn Village was settled in 1772 by Moravian missionary, David Zeisbereger, near a beautiful spring which, in the Delaware Native language, translates to "Schoenbrunn."
Once the site of Ohio's first Schoolhouse and church, today the village features 17 restored cabins, a cemetery, museum, theater, gift shop, and a beautiful large park area with trails, pavilions and picnic tables.
At its peak, Schoenbrunn Village grew to include 60 dwellings and 300 Delaware Native Americans and missionaries. Caught in the midst of the American Revolution, it was abandoned in 1777. The museum and recreated village share the unique perspective of where two cultures, Native American and European, meet in peace.
The village offers a variety of special events throughout the summer including a wedding reunion for the many couples married at the village over the past few decades on June 19, Dusk in the Village on July 17, Children's Day on August 7, lantern tours on September 18, The Colonial Trade Fair and Tavern Dinner on October 16 and 17, Sleepy Hollow on October 22 and 23, and the annual Christmas Lovefeast on December 12.
Admission to the village is: adults $7, senior citizens $5, Children 7-17 $5, and children under 7 are free. Family memberships are also available for only $20.
After Labor Day, the village remains open to the public on weekends through September and October.
