OCMP elects new board officers

The Ohio Corn Marketing Program (OCMP) board of directors has elected new officers for 2010. The new positions will take effect in January. Board members elected Monte Berg of New Knoxville in Auglaize County as chairman. Berg, who has previously served as vice chairman, will succeed David Roehm of Leesburg in Highland County. “I look forward to working for corn farmers across Ohio by continually identifying opportunities for them and their families,” Berg said. “As board officers, we have a great opportunity to effect change on some very important issues and challenges facing today’s farmer.” While Berg moves into the chairman’s position on the board, Paul Herringshaw, of Bowling Green in Wood County, will serve as vice chairman. Matt McCoy, of Wooster in Wayne County, was elected treasurer, and Brian Harbage, of South Charleston in Clark County, now moves into a leadership position as secretary. The OCMP was approved by an affirmative vote of Ohio’s corn producers. The voluntary, self-help program allows for the collection of a half cent-per-bushel assessment by all first purchasers of the grain. The program started on April 1, 1989. Funds from the program can only be invested for research, market development, education and promotion purposes. The program’s goal is to create new and expanded markets for corn and to increase the new farm income of Ohio’s corn producers. The development of the U.S. ethanol industry is quite possibly the biggest single accomplishment of any checkoff program in the nation. Decisions regarding the program are made by a 15-farmer member, farmer-elected board. Board members are elected from their respective districts for three-year terms.
