State Rep. Allan Sayre (D-Dover) has received the 2009 Legislator of the Year award for his work in creating the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. The award was given by a coalition of three Ohio agriculture commodity producers: the Ohio Corn Growers Association, Ohio Soybean Association and Ohio Wheat Growers Association.
Representative Sayre continually demonstrates a passion for Ohio agriculture, said Tadd Nicholson, the Ohio Corn Growers Association and Ohio Wheat Growers Association director of government affairs. If it werent for his leadership and commitment, Issue 2 may have never made it to the November ballot.
This honor presented to Sayre, vice-chairman of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, acknowledges his continued commitment and leadership in educating the public about the importance of the agriculture industry in Ohio. He spent many hours meeting and discussing with people the need to develop the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. He saw Issue 2 from its inception to its passage by Ohio voters in November. And, he has jointly sponsored House Bill 414 with Rep. Linda Bolon (D-Columbiana) on the implementing legislation for the board.
This is an extremely humbling honor, Sayre said. This coalition represents the best of Ohios farming community, and has been a tireless partner in helping us achieve success on Issue 2 in the fall.
Founded in 1993, the Ohio Wheat Growers Association educates and assists producers, industry representatives and legislators to improve the profitability and marketing strategies for the Ohio wheat industry. The Ohio Corn Growers Association represents the interests of more than 20,000 corn growers throughout the state. The Ohio Soybean Association is governed by a 24-member volunteer farmer board dedicated to education and promotion, as well as to uniting producer interest through support of legislative activities beneficial to the Ohio soybean industry.
