Tuscarawas County Public Library Summer Reading Program to start
The Tuscarawas County Public Library System invites families to participate in this year’s Summer Reading activities and contests. Kids, teens and adults can read, attend programs and earn prizes this summer at the Main Library as well as the Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek and Tuscarawas locations from June 10 through Aug. 3.
“Summer Reading is a great way for children to have fun and earn prizes while increasing their reading skills and combating the typical summer slide, which is the learning loss that often occurs over the summer months,” children’s services manager Linda Uhler said.
This year’s Summer Reading Program is titled “A Universe of Stories” and is space-themed. Children will have themed storytimes, crafts, programs and contests and be challenged to read to earn prizes. When a child completes their reading challenge, he or she will receive a free book. Children who attend programs and participate in the reading challenge are entered to win weekly prizes and get a chance to win a bicycle, courtesy of the Tuscarawas Dairy Association.
Teens going into grade 6-12 can participate throughout the summer as well. The library system will provide programs from art camp to a Teen Fandom Con.
“Teens can find something fun at the library all summer long,” public service associate Courtney Wallace said. “By attending programs and participating in the teen ‘Give Me Five Reading Challenge,’ teens will have the opportunity to win a themed basket at each of our locations.”
Adults are encouraged to participate in their very own Summer Reading Challenge as well. The library system will host a variety of programs geared toward adults including cooking classes, gardening club, star gazing, crafting, technology classes and more.
“We are excited to continue the ‘Give Me Five Reading Challenge’ this year for adults at each of our locations,” Bolivar branch supervisor Jessica Conley said. “Like teens, adults will receive a raffle ticket for every five items they read, listen to or watch this summer.”
According to Conley, adults also will be eligible to win prizes for their participation in programs and the reading challenge.
The library system will kick off its Summer Reading Program with a party at each of its locations. Each Summer Reading Kick-Off Party will be unique but will include music, food and fun for the whole family.
Dates and times of each party are as follows: June 4 at 5 p.m. for the Tuscarawas branch, 209 S. Main St.; June 4 at 6 p.m. for the Strasburg branch, Franklin Park Pavilion; June 6 from 6-8 p.m. at Tuscora Park, 161 Tuscora Ave. NW, New Philadelphia; June 7 from 5-7 p.m. for the Sugarcreek branch, 120 S. Broadway; and June 8 at 11 a.m. for the Bolivar branch, 455 W. Water St.
The Main Library’s Summer Reading Kick-Off Party will take place at Tuscora Park this year due to the current renovation and expansion project.
The library system’s Summer Reading Program is free and open to everyone. Registration for Summer Reading will begin Monday, June 3 and continue throughout the summer at the five locations of the Tuscarawas County Public Library System. Events and contests will begin June 10.
