Developmental disabilities encompass various conditions that affect an individual’s physical, learning, language or behavior skills.

Since 1955 the Wayne County Board of Developmental Disabilities has provided comprehensive programs in early childhood, preschool, school-age and adult services, as well as service coordination, behavior support, residential services, family support and transportation services to help ensure the inclusion of those with developmental disabilities in society.

Reading from a proclamation at a recent regular session, Commissioner Dave McMillen said, “This month and all other months, we strive to ensure those served are met with support, acceptance and praise as they work for a fulfilled life as independent as possible.”

Understanding these disabilities requires recognizing they are not merely medical diagnoses but complex conditions that profoundly impact the lives of individuals and their families. Children and adults with developmental disabilities may experience difficulties in communication, social interaction and daily living skills, affecting their ability to navigate the world around them.

Community inclusion is crucial for fostering understanding and acceptance.

“The purpose of (these) boards (throughout) Ohio remains strong in the continued push to meet all the needs of individuals and families,” McMillen said. “We invite everyone to join us in supporting those who are striving for success and reaching their full potential.”
