For the fourth time in the 2009-2010 school year, a teacher from the Wooster City School District has received statewide recognition for her work with her students.
Wayne Elementary School second-grade teacher Marilyn Maruna has been named the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month for March.
The Ohio Lotterys Teacher of the Month award recognizes outstanding teachers for their dedication, professionalism and work on behalf of the states young people. Each month, the organization recognizes one teacher in each of nine geographic regions across the state of Ohio based on contributions to their school, excellence in the classroom, leadership abilities, citizenship, community involvement and a variety of other criteria.
Maruna was nominated for the honor by Karen Arbogast, Wayne Elementary School principal.
Marilyn is an inspiration and role model for students, staff and the community, said Arbogast in describing what makes Maruna such a special teacher. She is always looking for new ways to challenge each and every student.
The Wooster City School District is lucky to have Marilyn on our teaching staff, said Wooster City School District Superintendent Michael Tefs. She only has the best interests of the students in mind, and as early as second grade, she begins instilling a world-class education in our children.
As a teacher, it is my goal to help the students and staff at Wooster be the best they can be, Maruna said. I feel very privileged to be awarded Teacher of the Month because there are so many wonderful educators in the district who deserve it just as much.
As the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month, Maruna received a certificate of excellence, tickets to a Cleveland Indians game and recognition during the game. An article about her accomplishments also appears on the Ohio State Lottery website.
Maruna is the fourth teacher from the Wooster City School District to receive the prestigious Teacher of the Month honor this school year.
Second-grade teacher Julie Beckett, Kean Elementary, received the honor for September 2009. Melrose Elementary second-grade teacher Juanita Booker was named the Teacher of the Month for October. Kean Elementary School physical education teacher and district swim coach Jeff DeHaan was named the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month for December.
