James Bernard obituary

                        
James J. “Jim” Bernard, 85, of Uhrichsville, died Jan. 24, 2010. Born Feb. 15, 1924, Jim was a son of the late Charles Henry and Clara Rosena Bernard. A 1942 graduate of Freeport High School, he spent his younger years in Freeport, moving next to Tuscarawas, and finally to Uhrichsville in 1961. Along with his wife, he owned and operated Bernard’s Grocery Store, Uhrichsville, for many years. In 1989, he retired from Alsco Aluminum, where he had worked as a painter. He was a member of Park Christian Church, Dennison, AARP, Uhrichsville Moose Lodge 740, and a life member of the Uhrichsville Eagles. Surviving are a son, Jeff (Cathy) Bernard of Bridgeport; two grandchildren, Carrie (Tim) Dobbs of Oak Island, N.C., and Jeff (Jamie) Bernard Jr. of Steubenville; five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jane (John) Demuth of Gnadenhutten and Barbara Bernard of New Philadelphia; brother-in-law, Karl Gerwels of Minster; and several nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, N. Eileen Bernard, whom he married in 1945; brother, Bruce Bernard; sister and brother-in-law, Marge and Bernard Gerwels; and his longtime companion, Helen Garrett. Services were held Jan. 27, 2010, at R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home, Dennison, with Pastor Stephen Cox officiating. Internment was in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery.
