John Sawvel obituary

                        
John Leo Sawvel, 97, of Dover, died Feb. 20, 2010, at Union Hospital, Dover. Born Sept. 11, 1912, in New Rumley, Leo was the son of the late Homer and Eva Sawvel. He retired in 1975 from Babcock Wilcox, Canton, where he was employed as a template maker for over 25 years. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and attended Grace Lutheran Church, Dover. Over the years, Leo had many interests, having been an avid outdoorsman, and liked hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling, and participated in several leagues. He was also a coin collector and member of both the Tuscarawas County and Barnesville Coin Clubs. In his early years, he was an outstanding baseball pitcher and was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals. Surviving are his wife, Catherine Sawvel; daughter, Jane (David) Daley of LaPorte, Ind.; son, John (Polly) Sawvel of Barnesville; sister, Louise Dwyer of Enon; stepchildren, Robert Kneppelt and Nancy Cox; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Sawvel; second wife, Hester E. Sawvel; brothers, Charles and Dwight Sawvel; and sister, Ruth Sawvel. Services will be held Feb. 24, 2010, at 1:30 p.m., at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Rev. Leland Eilert officiating. Interment will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside honors.
