Burman C. Berndt, 80, of Dover, died April 13, 2010, at Union Hospital. Burman was born March 29, 1930, in Dover, to the late William and Henrietta Berndt. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from the maintenance department at Twin City Hospital. Previous to that, he had spent nearly 25 years with Warner-Swasey, later Gradall, at New Philadelphia. Known for his great sense of humor, Burman lived life to the fullest. He always put family first and was especially proud of his grandchildren. Most people have hobbies, but Burman’s love for woodworking could be described as a passion. He was very talented and paid terrific attention to detail on projects as small as building birdhouses with his grandsons when they were young, to as large as cabinetry and beautiful pieces of furniture. He was a big sports fan, too. He loved college basketball and enjoyed following the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates in the pro ranks. Surviving are a son, Robert “Bob” Berndt of Dover; daughter, Mary Ann (Jeff) Smith of Dover; two grandsons, Brandon and Matthew Smith of Dover; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauldina Berndt; brothers, Paul, Carl, Edward, Lester, Milton, Donald, and Dean; sisters, Marion Burkholder and Henrietta Smith; and his companion of 26 years, Mary LaCroix. Public graveside services will be held June 12, 2010, at 10:30 a.m., in Calvary Cemetery, Dover. Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, is handling arrangements. Those wishing to share a fond memory of Berman may sign his online register at www.tolandherzig.com. Memorial gifts may be made to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, 6895 Dover-Zoar Rd., Dover 44622; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
