Russell Scheideger, 91, of North Canton, formerly of Zoar, died May 6, 2010, at Aultman Hospital, following a short illness. He was an avid sports fan and spent many years helping develop the Tuscarawas Valley High School football program. Russell was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Dennison, to the late Russell and Blanch Scheideger. He graduated from Dover High School in 1938 and worked at the former Zoar Brickyard and later for the former Hercules Engines, Canton, where he retired. He was a member of Canton Baptist Temple, where he was a member of the Ambassador Class. Russ formed and organized the Tusky Valley Trojan Booster Club in 1957 and was club president for nine years. He established the football program and was its chairman for 20 years. The job he most loved was the job of athletic trainer. He administered to all the athletes in football and basketball. Attending many athletic training schools all over Ohio, Russ took his job very serious. Dr. William W. Belknap II and Russ spent many hours treating, wrapping ankles, arms, and anything that needed their attention. He was loved and highly respected by all the young athletes and many coaches, including one of his best friends Larry Foltz of Wooster. Russ also was equipment manager for four years, score keeper for varsity basketball for 10 years, and worked under coaches Ed Baran, Jack Bair, Larry Foltz, Bob Heller, Ken Gold, Bill Frye, and Gene Ford. Surviving are his wife, Betty Scheideger; sons, Ronald R. (Shirley) Scheideger of Zoar and Gary L. Scheideger of Westerville; three grandchildren, Nikki (Sam) Moore and Ronald R. (Bri) Scheideger Jr., both of Mineral City, and Steve Scheideger of Canton; nine great-grandchildren, Ryan Beans, Aaron Beans, Zack Scheideger, Jesten Scheideger, Mickeal Scheideger, Kyle Moore, Seth Moore, Caitlin Scheideger, and Anna Moore; a great-great-granddaughter, Brianna Monk-Scheideger; adopted daughter and caregiver, Lisa Husser of Biloxi, Miss.; a niece and three nephews; stepdaughters, Charlotte Hartman, Jeanette (Bill) Haken, Sandra Day, and Sherry (Joe) Kepner; 19 stepgrandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Scheideger. Services were held May 10, 2010, at Lebold Funeral Home, Bolivar, with Revs. Bill Haken and Dave Harmon officiating.
