Viola Maude Bucher, 86, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully May 12, 2010, with her family at her side. A daughter of the late Homer “Boomer” and Olive Affolter, Viola, or “Doddie” as she was known by friends and family, was born August 24, 1923, in Dover. She was a graduate of New Philadelphia High School and alongside her husband, Bennie, was co-owner and operator of the former Boyd Shoe Store, Millersburg, and had also been affiliated with Eichel Meat Market, the A&P, where she was employed as a clerk. Additionally, she served as a matron and a cook for the Tuscarawas County Jail and had also co-owned and operated the former Bucher’s Lunch Restaurant, New Philadelphia, with Bennie and his family. Viola enjoyed gardening and caring for day lilies as well as cooking and preparing specialty chocolates and caramels. She especially enjoyed the Easter season and spent time preparing and hand-painting chocolate bunnies. Surviving are her husband, Bennie Bucher, whom she married in 1946; son, Ron Bucher of New Philadelphia; sisters, Helen Calendine of Dover and Martha Dillon of New Philadelphia; brothers, Bennie Affolter of Texas City, Texas, Edward Affolter of Troy, and James Affolter of Frankfurt, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Calendine and June Swonger. Memorial services were held May 17, 2010, at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Inurnment was in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia.
