Samuel Keith “Sam” McVey, 72, of Newcomerstown, died May 22, 2010, at The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, following a lengthy period of declining health. Sam was born Oct. 27, 1937, in Oxford Township, Tuscarawas County, to the late Terance Hillard and Thelma Christine McVey. He was a 1956 graduate of Newcomerstown High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent a 30-year career in the Navy, with 26 years of active duty and four years of reserve duty. He served on eight different ships during his career and his duty ports included Key West, Fla., Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, New London, Conn., Yorktown, Va., Charleston, S.C., Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and his retirement tour in Orlando, Fla. He was a nuclear depth bomb technician during his naval career and was awarded the Navy Gallantry Cross and the Navy Silver Star on five tours of duty in Vietnam during the war. After his naval career, Sam returned to Newcomerstown and worked in the firewood and lumber business for over 10 years. He was also a self-employed house painter for several years. He was a member of Port Washington Masonic Lodge 202, F&AM, and the Arbutus Chapter 288, Port Washington Order of the Eastern Star. He also enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, and working on his collection of classic cars. Surviving are his wife, Nancy L. McVey, whom he married in 1961; children, Kevin K. (Lisa) McVey of Pensacola, Fla., Shawn P. McVey of Vincennes, Ind., and Debbie L. (Luke) Gaumer of Fresno; four grandchildren, Logan Gaumer of Fresno, Justin K. McVey and Hannah K. McVey, both of Pensacola, and Cole P. McVey of Newcomerstown; siblings, Jess A. McVey of Newcomerstown, Chester R. (Delores) McVey of Guernsey, Terry (Jasenka) McVey of Cambridge, Margaret J. (Wayne A.) Hutchison of Newcomerstown, and Mary A. Billings of Coshocton; brother-in-law, Rev. Roger Bourne of Newcomerstown; sister-in-law, Betty L. McVey of Mountain Home, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Hillard Theodore “Dick” McVey, Robert L. “Bob” McVey, and infant brother, Donald Dean McVey; sister, Jennie L. Bourne; and brother-in-law, Carl Billings. To honor Sam’s wishes, his cremation will take place. No visiting hours or memorial services will be observed. Family suggests memorials be made to Port Washington Masonic Lodge 202, F&AM, c/o Danny Welch, Secretary, 6305 Golf Course Lane, Newcomerstown 43832.
