Joan L. Bumgardner, 79, of Orrville, formerly of Marshallville, died May 29, 2010, at Shady Lawn Healthcare Community, Dalton, following a period of declining health.
Joan was born in Cleveland to the late George and Lulu Shanower. She was a 1948 graduate of Medina High School and later earned an associate degree in accounting. She had been employed as a manager at the Goodwill Stores in Wooster, Orrville, and Rittman, and had worked in the credit department at Sears, Wooster, and Western Auto, Norton.
Joan was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Orrville, and a former member of Wadsworth Trinity United Church of Christ. She belonged to many organizations and clubs, serving as an officer or in any capacity she could help. Her memberships included Orrville VFW Post 3446 Ladies Auxiliary, VFW District 6 Ladies Auxiliary, Orrville American Legion Post 282 Auxiliary, AARP, Orrville Jelly City Seniors, Area Agency on Aging (board member), Ladies Circle of Christ United Church of Christ, Orrville Career Womens Guild, Info Link/Senior Forum, Marshallville Mothers Club, Marshallville Historical Society, Marshallville PTA, Orrville Lioness Club, Red Hat Society at Shady Lawn Community, and a member of several bowling leagues.
Surviving are children, Kim Bumgardner of Smithville, Gary (Linda Schantz) Bumgardner of Wooster, Terry (Kathy) Bumgardner of Smithville, Rick (Amanda) Bumgardner of Sterling, Greg (Brynne) Bumgardner of Winterset, Iowa, and Cindy Auvenshine of Orrville; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bumgardner, whom she married in 1949; and brother, Richard Shanower.
The family would like to extend a thank you to all the staff at Shady Lawn Community, Hospice of Wayne County, Wayne County Kidney Center, and Aubles EMS for their loving care of Joan.
Services were held June 2, 2010, at 11 a.m., at Auble Funeral Home, Orrville, with Pastor Randall Gehres officiating. Burial was in St. Michaels Church Cemetery, near Marshallville.
