Roy Darrell Batten, 78, of New Philadelphia, died June 5, 2010, at his home, briefly after being diagnosed with cancer. Born Sept. 24, 1931, in Ritchie, W.Va., Roy was the son of the late Arthur and Onas Batten. He was a retired welder at Babcock & Wilcox, New Philadelphia, and had also previously worked for Macombers and Gross Welding, New Philadelphia. Roy was a man who truly loved life and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Surviving are daughters, Carol Wignall of Iowa, Betty (Larry) Rodriguiz and Mary Meade, both of Texas, Nancy (Skip) Mugrage of Massillon, Donna Baugus of Bolivar, and Loretta (Stan) Conrad of Canton; son, William (Jean) Hanenkrat of Dellroy; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; special friend and brother-in-law, Francis Affolter; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Batten; three grandchildren, Scott Hetrick, James Angelo, and Kristine Kovacs; sisters, Thelma Skidmore, Gladys Monnet, Sylvia Tanner, and Freeda Affolter; and brother, Everett Batten. Cremation will take place, with inurnment to be held at a later date in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dover. There are no services or visitation.
