Arland C. “Mike” Caris, 76, of New Philadelphia, died July 14, 2010, at Schoenbrunn Health Care, following an extended illness. A son of the late Chester I. and Ellen Marie Caris, Mike was born Feb. 3, 1934, in Bucyrus. He graduated from Whetstone High School in 1952, and in 1956, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served stateside until his honorable discharge two years later. He held various jobs over the years and his employment became a large part of his life. He earned a position with Columbus Equipment and quickly became promoted to branch manager of both their Cadiz and Canton locations. He was highly regarded in his field by his colleagues and his employees even considered Mike as a family member, even calling him dad. He eventually retired in 1998. Mike was a member of Sacred Heart Church, New Philadelphia. He was also a member of New Philadelphia Elks Lodge 510 and a former member of the Dover Exchange Club. He enjoyed golfing with friends while his health permitted him to do so and he will be remembered as being an excellent poker player. Surviving are his wife, Sharon Caris, whom he married in 1956; sons, Michael (Rose) Caris of New Philadelphia, Douglas (Mary Ellen) Caris of Coatsville, Pa., and Thomas Caris of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren, Brooke (Pat Hostettler) Caris, Adam Caris, Tracee Stoiber, Mitchell Caris, Nicholas Caris, and Carmen Caris; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Caris and Logan Parmen; sisters, Dorothy Eusey of Bucyrus and Leota (John) Grover of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelly Anne Sachs; and a grandson, Timothy Stoiber. Mass of Christian Burial was held July 17, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Philadelphia, with Father Jeff Coning officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, New Philadelphia.
