Richard Eugene “Dick” Bair, 73, of Port Washington, died Dec. 28, 2011, at Union Hospital, Dover, following a lengthy struggle with cancer. Dick was born April 28, 1938, in Dover, a son of the late Clarence and Juanita Bair. He was a heavy equipment operator with the former Empire Coal Company and the Valley Mining Company, both of Tuscarawas County, for 25 years before his retirement from Valley Mining in 2000. Dick was a member of the former Moose Lodge, New Philadelphia. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, working with his computer, and solving jigsaw puzzles. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his great-granddaughter. Dick is survived by his wife, Doris M. Bair; daughters, Carol and Betty, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; stepsons, James M. (Cathy) Decker of Philadelphia and Michael J. (Lisa Morrison) Decker of Port Washington; stepdaughter, Doris (David) Bratschell of Philadelphia; 12 stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Margo; stepbrother, Gene (Charlene) Baker of Zoarville; half-sister, Kathy Jo McConnell of New Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews. To honor Dick’s requests, his remains are to be cremated. No visiting hours will be observed. Graveside services will be held in Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington, at the convenience of his family. Ourant Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Family suggests memorials be made in Dick’s name to Community Hospice, 201 W. Third St., Dover 44622.
