Robert “Dean” Turney

                        

Robert “Dean” Turney, age 89 of New Philadelphia, died Friday evening, Sept. 21, 2018, in the Community Hospice Truman House, following a period of declining health.

Born in Dennison on April 4, 1929, Dean was the son of the late Edgar Earl and Bertha M. (Patterson) Turney. He honorably served his country in the United States Army and was a medic in the Korean War.

On Sept. 18, 1954, Dean married his lifelong companion and friend, the former Nellie L. Davis, who preceded him in death on July 16, 2015.

Dean's professional career spanned a number of years with the former Belden Brick Company in Port Washington. Ultimately he retired in 1991 from the coal mines.

Dean loved the outdoors, whether he was swinging on his porch, tending to his garden or mowing his land. Throughout his lifetime he collected, restored, and drove cars and motorcycles including his Harley. He also had a talent for woodworking and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Dean will be deeply missed by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert Alan and Martha Turney of New Philadelphia; his grandson, Jeremy (Jennifer) Turney of Dover; his four step-great-granddaughters; his brothers-in-law, Charles (Linda) Davis of Strasburg and Larry Everett of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Dean was preceded in death by his brothers, Leroy (Goldie), Earl (Goldie), Ralph (Betty), Gail (Kathryn), Harold and Harry, and his sisters, Mildred (Jim) Tinney, Lula (Paul) Ferguson and Mary Turney.

Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 5-8 p.m. A service celebrating Dean’s life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 26, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia, where the Tuscarawas VFW will render military honors.

Friends are invited to the Geib Family Center following the committal service, where a meal will be shared.
