Roy Steinbach

                        
Roy R. Steinbach, 88, of Wintersville, formerly of Gnadenhutten, died peacefully Sept. 15, 2012, at his home. Born August 19, 1924, near Port Washington, Roy was a son of the late Lester R. and Fannie E. Steinbach. A 1942 graduate of Port Washington High School, he spent most of his life in Gnadenhutten, where he helped build and was then employed by the former Alsco plant. He then spent more than 20 years as the rural mail carrier based at the Gnadenhutten Post Office. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to serve bravely in the 5th Infantry Division in the European theater during WWII. While serving, he received the Purple Heart for wounds incurred in action. Roy had been a member of the Newcomerstown American Legion and Newcomerstown Elks. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed following all Detroit sports teams, especially the Detroit Tigers. He liked spending time gardening, playing golf, bowling, and playing cards and billiards. On March 20, 1947, Roy married the love of his life, Verna J. Steinbach, who survives. The couple recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Roy’s other surviving family includes daughters, Candy (Michael) Walters of Columbus, and Renee (Geno) Morelli and Wendy (Carl) Beckelheimer, both of Wintersville; grandchildren, Michael Walters, Ryan (Jenifer) Becker, Erin Becker, Matthew and Marc Becker, Jessica and Emily Beckelheimer, and Morgan and Mitchell Morelli; and great-grandson, Jack Becker. He was preceded in death by a son, Rex Steinbach; daughter, Kim Becker; and sister, Jeanette McMorrow. Services will be held Sept. 18, at 1 p.m., at R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home, Dennison, with Pastor Gregg Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Clay Union Cemetery, Gnadenhutten. Family and friends are invited to call Sept. 17, from 6-8 p.m., and a half hour prior to services.
