Samuel Amistadi Sr., 88, of Strasburg died Monday, May 12, 2014 in his residence with his family at his side following a period of declining health. Sam was born at Dover April 10, 1926, a son of the late John and Rosa (Vazza) Amistadi. He attended Dover High School and entered into the United States Army during World War II. He was a rifleman, having been involved in numerous campaigns throughout Central Europe. He was awarded a Purple Heart as a result of injuries sustained during the Battle of the Bulge. On June 21, 1952 he married the former Gloria Maria Salina and together the couple raised three children. For a number of years, Sam was the owner and operator of Tusco Mushroom at Beach City. He later turned to farming as a full-time profession and enjoyed operating Sam’s Hydroponic Greenhouse and Sam’s Produce. Sam was a lifetime member of the Navarre VFW and enjoyed every aspect of life on his produce farm. He was an ornery individual who loved tormenting his family and friends. Nobody ever knew quite what to expect when Sam was around. In addition to his wife of nearly 62 years, Sam is survived by his three children, Samuel (Rebecca) Amistadi Jr. of Strasburg, Nancy (Dean) Hauenstein of Apple Creek and Carol Amistadi of Strasburg; a brother Adam Amistadi of Dover and a sister, Angi Rall of Chicago. Five grandchildren, Amanda (Duane) Miler, Annette Amistadi, Sarah Amistadi, Carl Hauenstein and Mark Hauenstein, a great-grandson, Rylan Miller and numerous nieces and nephews complete the family. In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeff Amistadi, and siblings, John, Ray, George, and Paul Amistadi and Mary Stocker. In keeping with Sam’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services. Cremation care will be conducted through Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory at Dover.
