Community health, wellness always a top priority for WCH

As we look forward, it seems appropriate to take notice of where we are right now. The past year brought Wooster Community Hospital (WCH) state, regional, and national recognition in so many areas: Ÿ Winner of Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals Award for the second year in a row – national recognition Ÿ Received Outstanding Achievement Award for our cancer program from the America College of Surgeons – national recognition Ÿ Consumer Guide to Ohio Hospital Quality – highest-ranking hospital in Northeast Ohio – state recognition Ÿ Ranked at 19th (out of 160) lowest cost hospital in Ohio by Ohio Department of Health – state recognition Ÿ Sleep Disorders Center ranked as #2 sleep lab in U.S. Ÿ Wound Center Excellence Award – National Healing Corporation – national recognition Ÿ Home Health – HomeCare Elite – national recognition. As the WCH Board and Administration constantly review current operations, assess the needs of our community and our patients, and continue to plan well into the future, we have also paid close attention to the economic news and realities around us. We are very fortunate as an organization. Thanks to the foresight of our Board, and the careful use of resources by all of you, our hospital is in the enviable and uncommon position of being debt-free. This allows us to keep our charges low as we serve our community. It also allows us to continue to grow. With construction well underway on the two-story addition to our patient tower, the outlook for our community is that more people will be able to remain in Wooster for their health care, and will no longer need to travel outside our community. The ground floor of our new patient tower, of course, is occupied already by The Women’s Pavilion, providing maternity and nursery care and comprehensive women’s health care in 21 private rooms. The floor above it is The Progressive Care Unit, a step-down unit of 29 private rooms with monitored beds. The new floors above that will be our new Medical/Surgical floor – private rooms replacing the semi-private rooms currently located on our third floor in the existing tower. The top floor will also be home to The Joint Center, which we anticipate will continue to grow in volume as baby boomers begin to require joint replacements, and other services. We look forward to opening these new floors this summer. We’re working on other projects for our community. In cooperation with the OARDC, we started an organic garden to supply fresh produce to the hospital. This year, we hope to provide even more, and hopefully distribute it beyond the hospital soon. We’re continuing to add to our new Red Hot Mamas Menopause Education program, providing a free monthly program for women on a topic that has not previously been addressed in our community. Pediatric Orthopedics care is now available at our HealthPoint facility, and a new radiology network allows us to have experts across the nation interpreting your images. A new and innovative Health & Wellness program was developed for our own employees and is being shared with employees of companies throughout our community, designed to proactively promote healthier lifestyles and result in a healthier community. It is thanks to all of our physicians and employees that this is possible, and most of all to you for choosing Wooster Community Hospital for your health care. We look forward to continuing to serve you throughout 2010.
