Newcomerstown native Cy Young is the Hall of Fame pitcher whose record 511 victories may never be broken and whose name is on the award for Best Pitcher in Major League Baseball each year.

The Cy Young Festival Committee will host its first art auction on Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. The committee hopes to make this an annual event.

The festival has partnered with artist Mark Lewis, a modern contemporary portrait artist who was born in Akron and now resides in Glendora, California. Lewis’ paintings have been shown in galleries all across the United States.

Lewis is a direct descendant of Melinda Young, an aunt to Cy Young, the Hall of Fame pitcher with a record 511 victories and whose name is on the award for Best Pitcher in Major League Baseball each year.

Cy Young is well known in Newcomerstown and was influential in starting the town’s first little league in the early 1950s. Now — in the same spirit as Cy Young — Lewis is supporting the Newcomerstown Cy Young Festival and its commitment to the community with the opportunity of auctioning off pieces of his work to help raise funds for the festival and the many projects.

The festival committee is committed to the promotion of the village and its youth. They strive to provide a positive environment, enjoyable activities, and experience for all organizations and participants with an emphasis for youth athletic teams (baseball and softball) to grow and succeed.

The auction will feature original works of art, giclees on canvas and fine art prints. A highlight of the auction will be an original 30-by-40-inch portrait of Cy Young.

The entire catalog of 125 works of art can be viewed July 16 through Aug. 25 at www.liveauctioneers.com/auctioneer/6271/cy-young-days-charity-auction/.

Collectibles are available for every budget. Register early with www.liveauctioneers.com and pre-bid on items.
