YMCA gymnasts first at nationals
On June 25 the YMCA of Wayne County gymnastics team, Excel Platinum level, took first place in the YMCA National Gymnastics Championships.
Coached by Karcyn Young (junior and senior age group) and Angie Mullens (senior age group), the team traveled to Toledo to compete in its first National Championships since 2019. The Excel Platinum level of the YMCA of Wayne County gymnastics team has been undefeated for two years.
The team had eight members compete: Alyse Stutz, Amarah Painter, Ana Neuman, Brooke Dye, Danielle Hendrix, Kassidy Kartisek, Kennedy Leggett and Kira Lehman. The top-three scores on each event were used to calculate the team scores. In addition to placing first in the overall competition, the team was first on the uneven bars (Leggett, Hendrix, Neuman) and beam (Leggett, Hendrix, Neuman), second on the floor (Leggett, Neuman, Lehman), and sixth on vault (Leggett, Hendrix, Kartisek).
The team also was awarded for individual performances. Leggett was the YMCA National Gymnastics Excel Platinum, junior age group, all-around champion, and Hendrix placed third, Lehman placed fourth and Kartisek was seventh. In the senior age group, Neuman placed second all-around. In the individual event awards, each member of the team placed in at least the top seven, receiving a medal in one or more events.
