For those of a certain age, Ping-Pong balls dropping from the ceiling may invoke visions of Mr. Moose on the “Captain Kangaroo Show.” The Tuscarawas Central Catholic Saints Athletic Booster Club will hold its own version of a Ping Pong Ball Drop on Feb. 12 immediately following the last TCC home basketball game.

The event is planned as a fundraiser for the Saints golf teams. “We want to get the team members golf bags with the Central Catholic Saints logo on them so they have identifiable team bags,” said Michelle Angelini, organizer of the event.

For those who have never attended a Ping Pong Ball Drop, the way it works is rather simple. Each Ping-Pong ball sold has a number on it that is assigned to the purchaser. The balls are suspended in a net at the ceiling and then dropped onto the gymnasium floor at the end of the basketball game.

The first ball to drop into a cup on the floor will determine the winner of a cash prize, which could be as much as $750 if all Ping-Pong balls are sold.

Balls can be purchased for $5 each at Saints home basketball games and online at Eventbrite, with no limit on the amount one can purchase.

“The winner doesn’t have to be there in order to win,” Angelini said. “When they sign up for tickets online or in person, we ask for a name and phone number. It lets people who live out of the area or even out of state have a chance to support their Central Catholic family members.”

Angelini said team bags will be purchased from the proceeds for all members of the varsity and junior high teams, which this school year numbered 14. The co-ed teams compete in the Inter Valley Conference during a season that runs from early August through September.

Having three sons participating in the Saints golf program has made Angelini a supporter of the teams. “Ethan played on the varsity team and graduated in 2018, Andrew played, graduating in 2021, and Oliver played on the junior high team this past season.”

Saints golfers compete against other teams in the Inter Valley Conference, which recognized three TCC varsity girls for the 2023 season. Sophomore Khloe Trivoli was named first team, sophomore Nora Jackson was named second team and junior Julia Sciarretti received an honorable mention.

The varsity golf team is coached by Trip Hisrich while Matt Fantin coaches the junior high Saints under Athletic Director Mike Sweet.

A link to Eventbrite for purchasing Ping-Pong balls can be found on the TCC Saints Athletic Booster Club’s Facebook page or by searching TCC Ping Pong Ball Drop at eventbrite.com. The drop will take place from 8:30-9 p.m. at the finish of the home basketball game.
