West Holmes baseball wins sectional title
                        

Here is a recap of recent postseason results involving several Hiland and West Holmes sports teams:

Baseball

West Holmes won a Division II sectional championship by defeating River View 5-2 in 12 innings on May 16.

The 11th-seeded Knights (12-10) scored three runs in the top of the 12th inning, then held No. 7 River View scoreless in the bottom of the inning to pull out the win. West Holmes led 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, but RV struck for two runs in its final at-bat to send the game to extra innings.

Morgan Smith had four hits including a two-out, two-run single in the 12th inning to lead WH’s offense. Carson Tanner chipped in three hits.

Nick Ginsburg got the start on the mound for the Knights and tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits while striking out eight. Brayden Miller earned the win in relief, as he tossed four innings and punched out seven.

The Knights advanced to play No. 5 Cambridge in a district semifinal at a to-be-determined location on May 22.

Hiland rolled to a 13-0 five-inning win over Malvern in a Div. IV sectional semifinal on May 16.

Will Schlabach (five strikeouts) and Caden Coblentz (six) combined to throw a no-hitter for the Hawks.

Cody Yoder paced Hiland’s offense with two hits (home run), three RBIs and two runs scored. Connor Beachy added two hits (triple), two RBIs and scored twice. Wyatt Miller (three runs scored) and Nolan Yoder both chipped in two hits, and Grady Monigold drove in two runs.

Girls track and field

West Holmes had one relay and four individuals advance to regionals after the first day of the Div. II West Holmes District on May 16.

Laney Duff won the high jump with a jump of 5-feet-2 to advance to regionals. Daphne Alexander also qualified for regionals in the high jump, finishing second with a mark of 5-2.

The 4x800 relay of Noelle Smith, Brenna Myers, Carolyn Miller and Alexis Wagers finished second in 10:32.96 to punch its regional berth.

Zaylie Shultz qualified for regionals by finishing second in the shot put with a toss of 35-½. Casey Ogi advanced to regionals by placing third in the pole vault with a vault of 9 feet.

Hiland’s Myla Troyer also advanced to regionals by finishing fourth in the high jump with a mark of 4-8 on the first day of the Div. III Newcomerstown District on May 15.

Boys track and field

West Holmes had two individuals qualify for districts after the first day of the Div. II West Holmes District on May 16.

Tristen Middaugh won the pole vault with a vault of 12-6 to advance to regionals while Grant Miller punched his ticket by placing fourth in the discus with a throw of 133-9.

The 4x800 relay of Zeke Galbraith, Reid Chaney, Jacob Miller and Braydyn Lemon just missed advancing to regionals, placing fifth in 8:46.66.

Hiland’s Gabriel Chupp also advanced to regionals by finishing third in the long jump with a mark of 20-¼ on the first day of the Div. III Newcomerstown District on May 15.
