Children from throughout Wayne County in Grades 3 to 6 are invited to attend a youth basketball clinic on Sunday, Nov. 8, as part of the annual Al Van Wie Classic. The clinic will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Timken Gymnasium on The College of Wooster campus. Sessions will be conducted by members of The College of Wooster men’s basketball team and coaching staff. At the same time, coaches of youth teams will be led in an instructional clinic by men’s basketball Head Coach Steve Moore. Participants are asked to bring a canned or boxed good donation for People to People Ministries. Cash donations will also be accepted. The basketball clinics tip-off two weeks of Al Van Wie Classic events. With support of the Rotary Club of Wooster, area elementary schools will participate in a food drive the week of Nov. 9 to 13. Contributions from this week will also benefit People to People Ministries, an organization that provides food and other necessity assistance to clients from throughout Wayne County. The elementary school that gathers the largest food donation will be recognized at halftime during the Al Van Wie Classic men’s college basketball tournament hosted by The College of Wooster on Nov. 20 and 21. Wooster’s Fighting Scots this year host Carnegie Mellon University, Heidelberg College and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) for games to be held at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. each evening. Admission to the games will be through ticket purchase or a food/cash donation to benefit People to People. In addition to recognition at the tournament, the winning elementary school will be rewarded by the Rotary Club of Wooster with a donation of gym supplies and a congratulatory ice cream party thanks to assistance from Smith Dairy. More information on the tournament is available through The College of Wooster Athletics Ticket Office. Participating schools will promote their involvement in the upcoming food drive.
