West Holmes seniors Justin Stitzlein and Marshall Overholt may very well be avid bird enthusiasts.

But it didn’t seem that way on Monday, Nov. 28, when they traveled to the home of the Eagles to stomp on a pair of Falcons in the eighth annual Greater Mid-Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association/Kohlmyer Sports All-Star Preview, inside Kates Gymnasium on the campus of Ashland University.

After compiling a 41-5 record during the 2010-11 season and qualifying for his second-straight State tournament, Stitzlein improved to 3-0 in the preseason All-Star showcase, beating Hillsdale’s Seth Heldenbrand 5-2 by scoring a two-point takedown and picking up three near-fall back points during the first of three one-minute periods.

Overholt waited until the second period to make his move against the Falcons’ Jake Finley, however, scoring a single leg takedown against his Hillsdale opponent and holding on for the 2-0 victory.

After going 23-12 as a junior in 2010-11, and qualifying for the Division II District tournament, Overholt won for the second time in three All-Star Preview appearances, but fellow Knights junior, and 2011 State placer (seventh) Max Rohskopf fell to 0-2 lifetime in the preseason exhibition, dropping a 7-2 decision against DIII State qualifier Wyatt Music of Ashland Crestview.

After a sophomore season in which he went 31-5, Rohskopf will use the preseason tune-up to help produce a sweeter song out on the mat when he and the rest of the Knights kick off the 2011-12 campaign on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they travel to Cambridge High School for the Southeast Ohio Medical Center Bobcat Invitational Tournament.

The Knights are the defending champions at the Cambridge Invite after placing 12 wrestlers in the top six and getting championship-winning performances from Overholt and Stitzlein, who also came away with Most Valuable Wrestler accolades.

The Knights will wrestle inside the Dungeon for the first time on Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they host Northwestern and Waynedale in a Tri-Meet.
