Just call it a wake-up call. After struggling to a 72-64 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Denison last Saturday, there was nothing close Wednesday night. The College of Wooster, the nation’s No. 1-ranked Div. III team, roared by Allegheny 88-56, a remarkable turnaround from a last-second, 76-73 victory over the Gators Dec. 8. Wooster is now 17-0 overall and 8-0 in the NCAC, the best start to a season in school history. The Scots’ win sets up a first-place showdown against Wittenberg tonight (Jan. 22), a game that will pit the NCAC’s last two unbeatens. The Tigers (11-4) barely made it to Wooster with first-place on the line, surviving a 55-54 scare against Wabash. Wabash led Witt 29-24 at halftime, but the Lil Giants (14-2, 6-2 NCAC) couldn’t hold on as the Tigers rallied back for the one-point win. Wabash tied the game at 51-51 with 1:27 to play, but the Tigers scored four straight to stave off Wabash. In Wooster, a dozen Scots got into the scorebook as they jumped to a 43-25 halftime advantage. Ian Franks led Wooster with 13 points and Matt Fegan with a dozen. Game-time tonight is at 7:30 p.m. at Wooster’s Timken Gymnasium.
