General trio lays it all out at Districts

Wooster High wrestling coach Troy Worth and his trio of district qualifiers knew going in the Mentor District was going to be tough, and in that regard, it didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately, disappointment won out. Keith Yost, Jordan Boreman and Zach Ellsworth earned their District berths after qualifying out of the North Canton Sectional, but their bids for a shot at State came up short. Yost won a pair of matches and Boreman came away with a win, but they couldn’t break into the elite group of four to qualify for State. “(Assistant coach) Don (Rammel) and I were talking and we’re proud of the boys,” said Worth, reflecting not only on his trio of district qualifiers but the entire team. “Anything we asked of the boys they did and they did everything they could. We couldn’t ask for a better group of kids.” Yost won his opening two 152-pound matches by posting a 51-second pin over Kyle Koncek of Midpark and then slipping by Zack Messinger of Stow 4-1. That earned him a date with David Habat of St. Ignatius, who showed he had lost little off his state championship form at 145 a year ago by posting a 21-6 win over Yost. In the consolation semis, Brandon Clemens of Perry slipped by Yost 3-1 to earn a ticket into the go-to rounds, where Clemens defeated Messinger 3-1 for third place. Yost wrapped up his tournament in sixth as he lost to Nick Stofan of Riverside 8-4 to finish the season with a 38-6 record. “In his first match, Keith got the season pin record (with 22) and then he ran into Zach Messinger, which was a tough one but he won,” said Worth. “Then he ran into Habat and that one wasn’t close. Keith said he was so strong – he said he would go to hit a move and Habat was out of the way. He was as fast as Keith and a lot stronger and he was never out of position. He is the projected state champion.” Boreman had his hands full with an eventual State qualifier in his first match. The senior opened his 130-pound competition with a 10-0 setback to eventual third-place finisher Alex Sweeney of Mentor, but Boreman bounced back to defeat Garfield Heights’ Dwight Bullard 9-4. His season came to an end in his third match as Josh Arrendale of Perry pinned him in 4:00. “That weight class was tough; really, really tough,” said Worth. “His second match he wrestled well and he worked the kid. In his last match, he was only down two points and he was going for a takedown and got caught and put on his back.” Ellsworth’s tournament was lost in the days leading up to Districts when a bout with the flu sapped his strength. He dropped his first match to Ryan Winchell of South 12-9 and he was eliminated in a 5-0 loss to Shawn Dell of Lakeside. “Zach was sick the whole week with the flu,” said Worth. “He was sick a half-day and then missed a whole day. He kept his weight down because he was sick and wasn’t eating. It just sapped his strength and he had no energy in the third period. He got sick at the wrong time.” All in all, though, Worth was pleased with the season. “We learned along the way what it took to be a team,” he said. “We had one lopsided loss to Waynedale, but all the others (four) were less than five points. We were 8-5 overall and third in the OCC (Ohio Cardinal Conference), and last year we were seventh. That was a big improvement. “We were more consistent across the board in all the weight classes. Even the ones who were new or inexperienced wrestled hard. Everyone had to earn it from us.”
