Hawks get back on the winning track

After a pair of sub-par performances, the Hiland Hawks were anxious to get back on the court and get things straightened out. They were so anxious, in fact, they even moved the game up a day. Hiland hosted Conotton Valley on Monday, Feb. 8, instead of Tuesday’s regularly scheduled game because of a forecasted snow storm that loomed off in the not-too-distant future. The Hawks came out firing on all cylinders against the Rockets, blowing out the boys from Bowerston 72-47. “Our guys know that the past two games they didn’t play well or very hard and they were all anxious to get back out there and play again,” Hiland coach Mark Schlabach said. “We still aren’t firing on all cylinders.” The Hawks had enough firepower to take care of their Inter-Valley Conference foe on Monday. Jalen Miller and Luke Burch did the damage to Conotton Valley at first, scoring the first eight points for the Hawks. Noah Boyd, Jason Miller and Chaise Gerber got in on the act, and a Dylan Kaufman triple capped off the first quarter scoring with the Hawks up 17-9. And the Rockets were huffing and puffing, as Hiland kept running fresh legs at them. “Our depth and balance paid big dividends,” Schlabach said. “We wanted to get the ball inside to different people and take advantage of some mismatches. When we do that, the balance happens. That was nice to see.” Jason Miller and Josh Yoder sandwiched 3-pointers around a Boyd bunny to push the Hiland lead to 29-11 midway through the second quarter and the Hawks were up 39-21 at intermission. The balance of the Hawks continued into the third quarter as the hosts opened up a 57-35 lead going into the final frame and the bench players finished things out. Four different players reached double figures for the Hawks, led by Kaufman with 16 and Boyd with 14. Jalen Miller scored 12 and Burch finished with 11. Jason Miller chipped in seven points and Yoder added five. Jordan Miller stroked a triple and Braden Conn and Gerber rounded out the Hiland offensive. Conotton Valley’s freshman post man, Brandon Bailey delivered 15 points and Shawn Ball came off the bench to pitch in 11 for the Rockets.
