Holmes disc golf club holds doubles tourney
The Holmes County Disc Golf Club held its doubles tournament on July 27at Deer Run Park in Millersburg.
All told, 19 teams of 38 players took to the course to battle it out. Scoring was slow at first, as the entire course had been drenched with rain, but come mid-afternoon, teams were shooting some low scores. In the end Derek Schmidt and Nicholas Blair of Canton won the tournament with a combined 21-under. Brothers Alan and Anthony Hilty took second at 18-under, and brothers Brandon and Grant Yoder took third with 17-under. Austin Yoder won the closest to pin, and Elias Yoder won the longest drive.
The doubles tournament, sponsored by Hershberger Lawn Structures and the HCDGC, was a new style of play for the club.
“Our singles tournaments have been very popular,” President Ethan Steiner said, “but sometimes weaker players don’t feel they can compete. A doubles tournament lets weaker players pair up with a better player and thus have more success on the course.”
In doubles play, both players throw a tee-off shot, and then players alternate throwing until they chain out. Overall, reception of the format was positive.
The HCDGC would like to thank HLS for its sponsorship.
“HLS contacted us this year and said they wanted to get seriously involved in supporting disc golf in Holmes County,” said Doug Gray, tournament director. “They have really delivered. They not only donated money to the club, but installed benches around the course. We are also in the process of partnering with them to install disc golf baskets at the elementary school in Millersburg, along with donating discs to the physical education department. It is because of local sponsors like them and Keim in Charm that disc golf is thriving in our community.”
