Hiland outlasts Waynedale in 5-set thriller
Lady Hawks win the battle in five over Waynedale
Hiland knew it would have its hands full versus a talented Waynedale team on Aug. 25, but the Lady Hawks proved to be up to the challenge in posting a five-game victory, winning 25-20, 24-26, 25-13, 32-34, 15-12.
Momentum swings marked this heated battle, with the fourth and fifth games proving especially nerve-racking.
Ava Troyer led Hiland with 27 kills and four blocks; Haley Yoder added 16 kills, 21 digs and 13 service points; and Ava Weaver doled out 48 assists to go with 16 digs and 14 points. Hiland improved to 3-0.
Lady Knights capture first win of the season
Tri-Valley took down the Lady Knights of West Holmes in three games on Aug. 27, earning a 25-17, 25-19, 25-23 victory over WHHS.
Leading the Lady Knights was Brynlee Reed with 20 assists, five aces and two kills while middle hitters Daphne Alexander and Ella McMillian combined for nine kills and four assisted blocks. Zaylie Shultz and Casey Norman contributed four and three kills, respectfully.
Two days prior, the Lady Knights earned their first win of the season, a 3-0 victory over Madison Comprehensive. In winning 25-23, 25-16, 25-13, WHHS was led by Reed with 29 assists and two aces; Alexander with seven kills and a solo block; McMillian with six kills, two solo and three assisted blocks; Casey Norman with three kills and a solo block; Shultz with six kills and an ace; Allie Snyder with three kills, three aces and five digs; libero Peyton Carathers with 11 digs; and Jasi Weber with five digs and two aces.
In a tough battle versus New Philadelphia on Aug. 30, the Lady Knights dropped a 26-24, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18 decision to the Quakers. West Holmes had the best defense and blocking night of the season, led by McMillian with eight kills, eight digs, two solo and four assisted blocks. Reed led the team with 38 assists, four aces, five digs and two kills. Alexander added six kills, nine digs and a season-high four solo blocks and six assisted blocks, along with two aces. Norman had a team-high 10 digs, along with four kills. Shultz notched six kills and two aces, and Snyder added five kills and six digs.
Garaway gets the
best of Coshocton, Ridgewood
In a heated confrontation between two equal teams, Garaway emerged victorious over Coshocton 26-24, 27-25, 25-16 on Aug. 27.
Morgan Schlabach pounded 22 kills to go with four digs for the Lady P’s while Shelby Gerber bumped up 40 assists. Nicole Custer added 12 kills, 14 digs and two blocks; Grace Yoder had two aces; and Jordyn Keim tacked on 21 digs in the victory.
On Aug. 30 the Lady P’s took down Ridgewood 25-15, 25-22, 12-25, 25-13. Schlabach amassed another 19 kills, adding 19 digs and three aces. Gerber doled out 28 assists; Custer added seven kills, 23 digs and four blocks; and Keim locked down 19 digs.
With the win Garaway improved to 5-1 on the campaign.
