West Holmes senior Joseph Bukosky shot well enough at the Division II Sectional to be in the running at the end, but also to have his heart broken as he finished one stroke away from moving on.
On a cool and wet Wednesday at River Greens, near Newcomerstown, Bukosky shot an 82 to lead the Knights to an 11th-place finish out of 29 teams competing at the D-II Sectional. West Holmes scored a 347, 20 strokes off the pace set by East Liverpool and Indian Creek. Minerva was next with a 328, followed by Sandy Valley (329), Maysville (331) and Meadowbrook (336). The top six teams moved on to next week’s District golf action at Apple Valley.
“The guys did not seem to be having any fun, and I think the weather conditions had a lot to do with that,” said West Holmes coach Kim Kauffman.
And they played like it.
Joey Gonzalez was right behind Bukosky for the Knights with an 84. Bryce Spitler shot an 89 and Patrick Shriver rounded out the card with a 92.
“We had a good season with some very positive moments with this young team,” Kauffman said.
