Garaway controlled the tempo early, but once Hiland got into its groove, the Lady Hawks did the leading, dancing their way to a 38-28 triumph over the Pirates in an Inter-Valley Conference battle Thursday, Feb. 11, in Sugarcreek. “This was your typical grind-out game with Garaway,” Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said. “Our depth became a factor at the end. It doesn’t pay off in the first four minutes of the game. Fortunately, there was another 28 minutes to go.” Ally Miller got Garaway going with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from Kristen Troyer had the hosts ahead 5-0. Two more free throws from Sarah Bardall and a short jumper by Hallie Slemmer and Garaway was ahead 9-0. Hilary Weaver scored a three-point play, a pair of Noelle Yoder free throws and a Katelyn Stuckey bucket had Hiland trailing 9-7 by the end of the first period. Arrianna Schrock tied the game on the opening possession of the second quarter, but the Pirates pulled out to a 15-11 lead. Two turnovers led to two Hiland hoops and the Lady Hawks were even at 15. Slemmer put the Pirates back up 17-15, but a Weaver triple gave Hiland its first lead of the game at 18-17 with two minutes remaining in the first half, and the Lady Hawks never looked back. A Weaver layup gave Hiland a 20-17 lead at the break. “She was smart and found the right times to attack,” Schlabach said of Weaver, who led Hiland with 17 points. Hiland sprung a zone trap on Garaway in the third quarter that completely baffled the Pirates, leading to four turnovers and enabled the Lady Hawks to open up a double-digit lead they maintained the rest of the game. “Garaway does such a good job of being patient and limiting the amount possessions in a game, we needed to do something to turn it up a notch,” Schlabach said. “For them to come out in a two-two trap was about as uncharacteristic as they could possibly be,” Garaway coach Scott Bardall said. “We just got caught off guard a little bit.” Hiland’s 13-4 run in the third helped secure the win over the Pirates. Hiland improved to 14-0 in the IVC, 16-2 overall. Yoder added 10 points and Stuckey nine for Hiland. Sarah Bardall paced Garaway with nine and Kristen Troyer added eight. The Lady Hawks and Hiland boys will entertain Newcomerstown in a varsity-only doubleheader Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center, The girls play first at 6 p.m.
