Lady Knights turn up the defense on Lady Lex

The defense dominated, and the Lady Knights rolled over Lexington 59-28 Saturday in the Dungeon in Ohio Cardinal Conference basketball action. “I thought our defense took control and kind of rattled them early,” said West Holmes coach Lisa Patterson. An Emily Wilson three-point play gave the Lady Lex an early 3-2 lead, but from that point on, it was all West Holmes. Lindsey Arnold scored on a layup, and after a Lexington turnover, Lindsy Snyder scored to put the hosts up 6-3. Bethany Molnar made it 8-3 Lady Knights before Wilson scored again to trim the West Holmes lead to 8-5. Brittany Glaser cut the West Holmes lead to 8-7. Arnold scored, made a steal and scored again to give West Holmes a 12-7 lead after the first period. Paige Asche hit a 3-pointer and Arnold added another and the Lady Knights stretched their lead to 18-7 early in the second quarter. Justice Wright struck from deep to make it 21-7 and the lead ballooned to 29-12 by intermission. West Holmes held Lexington to a single field goal in the third quarter, a 3-pointer, and opened up a 44-15 lead before cruising to the final. Patterson said the girls are playing with a bit of an attitude, trying to regain their swagger in the OCC. Leading the offensive effort for the winners was Arnold with 16 points. Wright chipped in a dozen and Snyder finished with 10. Asche finished with five points. Molnar and Shelbie Henderson added four points apiece. Rachelle Morrison dropped in a 3-pointer, Jasmine Troyer and Mallori Vess added two points apiece and Haley Moniger split a pair of free throws to round out the scoring for West Holmes. Glaser led the Lady Lex with 10. The defense of the Lady Knights forced 25 Lexington turnovers. Arnold finished with eight steals. West Holmes improved its record to 8-3 overall, 5-1 in the OCC. Lexington dipped to 6-5, 3-4. The Thursday, Jan. 7, game against Madison was rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26.
